Monument Releasing recently announced the North American theatrical release of The Fishbowl (La pecera), an acclaimed Puerto Rican ecofeminist drama and the striking feature debut by interdisciplinary artist Glorimar Marrero Sánchez. Set to debut in U.S. theaters in March 2025, the film will coincide with Puerto Rican Emancipation Day on March 21, according to a press release. A streaming release will follow on May 21, 2025.
The Fishbowl made history as the first Puerto Rican-produced feature to premiere at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. The film is set on the island of Vieques, a U.S. military testing ground that has been subjected to toxic munitions like napalm and depleted uranium. The story follows Noelia (Isel Rodríguez), a 40-year-old artist battling terminal cancer, who returns to Vieques after learning her illness has spread. Choosing to keep her condition a secret due to the lack of local medical resources, Noelia immerses herself in the fight against the environmental devastation caused by U.S. military activities.
As Noelia's health worsens, she grapples with a profound choice: to leave for treatment or to stay and continue her resistance alongside her community. The film poignantly explores themes of environmental racism, colonialism, and resilience, presenting Noelia's personal journey as a collective act of defiance.
The file features a predominantly female cast and crew.
